England - Lake District to North York Moors

We drove past turnoffs to two more castle ruins not far from Penrith but decided not to stop. Brough Castle was built by William Rufus from the Scottish Kingdom around 1100 within the old Roman fort of Verterae. Brougham Castle was built in the early 1200s on another old Roman fort site by Robert de Vieuxpont. Roger Clifford married into the family in the 1260s and later became Lord of Brougham.
